Areas of Practice / Medical marijuana regulation — affecting growers, dispensaries and edibles bakers.
Colorado leads the country in managing and regulating the medical marijuana industry. Joel's decades of experience advising small businesses provided a head start in understanding what small medical marijuana growers, dispensaries and edibles bakers would need to do to thrive in the newly-regulated environment.
Even before the ink had dried on Governor Ritter's signature on Colorado House Bill 1284, Joel was helping existing growers, dispensaries and bakers understand the new law. He advised them on methods for complying with the law's requirements, and helped them navigate through acquisitions, mergers, leasing and license applications to meet the strict deadlines the law put in place. Joel also is available to help start-up businesses comply with the somewhat different rules that apply to those that didn't exist when the bill was signed.
In July 2010 - just a month after House Bill 1284 became law - Joel presented one of the first continuing legal education seminars in Colorado on medical marijuana regulation and business issues, co-presenting with Matt Cook, Senior Director of the Medical Enforcement Division of the Colorado Department of Revenue. Joel stays current with officials of Colorado city governments, which also maintain some regulatory authority over medical marijuana in Colorado.
